The problem everyone has is that large urban areas are driving the conversation on house prices. I'm looking to move to a tiny town in north eastern WY, and I am not having a problem finding a whole bunch of houses for less than $200k.
Another thing I have noticed is how much comparisons to the past are being used, even though the two time periods aren't really comparable. 40 years ago middle class people lived in small, 2 or 3 BD 1 bath houses, and had next to none of the "stuff" we had. The typical house had at most one TV, no internet, no central AC, a party line landline phone, and maybe two cars. If the kids were brothers they slept in the same bedroom (in a 2bd.) This was my life until jr high, 1984, when my family put on a living room addition onto the house, and turned our old living room into a master BD for mom and dad to sleep in, giving me and my brother our own rooms for the first time.
If a family of four today lived the same kind of life mine did in the 1970s, they could live one income, if they get out of the large urban areas on the coasts.
