Things like this remind me of footbinding in China. It outlasted dynasties, and several emperors tried to stop it, along with all sorts of men who thought it stopped giving them good workers on the farm or just torturing their daughters for status. Several laws and even raids happened to stop this. Every time, the end of the dynasty had women with broken feet serving the emperor.

It was ended by harsh responses by Mao and his communist revolution, and yet we still find the odd lady who claims to be 104, but her birth certificate says 50. Her feet are broken and she loves the fame it brings. None of the men claim to like it except for a small magazine that couldn't find enough fans to keep going.

But if you ever bring it up today it is the biggest sign of patriarchy. These women were forced to break their feet in half for their fathers and uncles pleasure. No one ever mentions that women did it to their daughters, and how much the fathers complained about it. The only way to stop it today is to pass laws that say it will not happen again, even though the women talking about it seem to have very small feet. It becomes all glory to the insanity again.
