They all think they understand the Bible, that's the problem. Without Christ's transformation, the soul rejects the Bible.
1st Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
You don't even need to go to God; The bible is, at it's core, documentation - of laws, parables, allegories, stories and cautionary tales that rely on actual historical and sociological events of the times.
In other words, there is context. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. You can't look at scripture without acknowledging the society that it comes from - and that's where alot of things get really interesting.
History is one of the easiest topics to use to lie to people, as facts and events in a vacuum can be interpreted in a number of ways, and simply engineering in omission can change the story in it's entirety.
Over time, I've begun to feel that Christianity suffers alot from 'modern' interpretations of scripture. There's reasons for it - if you really start looking at some of the lessons in context and actually thinking about it, Christianity is far from as passive as alot people love to paint it. But, for good or for ill, alot of people are very invested in carrying the martyrdom interpretation of scripture.
