See, the Sikh Confederation first encountered the Islamic Mugal Empire as it expanded into Central Asia. Religious tensions arrived because, unsurprisingly, the Muslims were highly hostile, supremacist, and disproportionately violent to Sikhs. This includes instances where Muslim children would beat an old man, then the old man would hit one of the children, and the Muslims would lynch hundreds of Sikhs and exterminate a whole village in a frenzied reprisal killing. The king of the Sikh Confederation went to the Mugal king's court to protest this in an official diplomatic meeting. He was summarily executed in the Mugal king's court, and his head was sent back to the confederation.

An emergency council of Sikh barons and religious leaders got together to see what to do, and lo and behold, God told the Sikh religious elders that every Sikh man should carry a sword at all times, and he should learn how to fight with it, thus marshalling every single adult male in the population. You know... just in case one Muslim showed up to start shit.

The Mugal Empire (and later caliphates) would have limited success against the Sikhs as a result of this aggressive decentralized bureaucracy, and martial society. They could gain ground, but never hold it, and it could always be taken back, right up until the British showed up and said, "Fuck it, you guys want a job?" and started recruiting them into the British Empire's ranks as excellent warriors.

To this day, most Sikh's carry ceremonial blades (at least in Europe and America, they still carry swords in Asia).
