I was a little too glib. The Thai ladyboy/sex paradise/expat pedo land culture is well-known, but the point is it was and still is a pretty inconsequential part of the world.

But you're right, transsexualism doesn't originate with any particular culture. I'm pretty sure they don't share the Western perception that men can literally become women though.
