It really depends on whether they're bred from hunting lines or not. I had a golden that came from a hunting line. He was a good pet, but he was a fucking savant at retrieving, especially retrieving from water. I replaced him with another golden from a non-hunting line. That dog is a good pet but utterly useless at retrieving.
