It's not cope. It's the only avenue. You wanna keep hoping triple aaa studios backed by the same people as Disney and Hollywood are going to start releasing good non woke games?
There's a much higher chance of indie studios given their mixed backgrounds.
It is cope in some form, but you're also correct that supporting apolitical or non-Regime indie devs is the only reasonable way to make a difference.
If an indie dev does some blatant political messaging, you can literally tell them to fuck off and affect their bottom line. (Or, just write them reasonable feedback and maybe they'll reconsider taking overt political stances if they realize they are pissing off fans/customers).
I’m not saying good indie games aren’t great, or that they’re ALL pozzed. The FNaF guy donated to Trump, and there’s always the Domina gigachad with the anti-Covid patch notes and the anti-Keffals Twitter posts. Even some of the pozzed ones are mechanically very good (Celeste being the most infamous example).
I’m saying that anyone looking to indie games, particularly anything that’s part of the “indie gaming scene” and saying “yes, this is the antidote to Blizzard et. al.’s wokeness” is ignoring an awful lot of woke shit. To go back to my examples of based developers, both of them got cancelled shortly after their politics became clear, and I don’t exactly think many people in the indie scene stood up and said “hey, I don’t like that the Domina guy has right-wing opinions, but I’m not comfortable with how a multibillion dollar company just flexed its muscles on a tiny little studio.”
