I wouldn't want to live in Russia either, but I think while they are more openly violent or authoritarian than the West, they are less totalitarian. Ironically that might be possible because of the violence. People naturally don't cross the authority on small things if they can help it. In the West we still have the notion and trappings of liberty, so we still freely express wrongthink and are surprised when we get arrested for it.
