You have to run both script and DNS based adblocking these days, even then it's not enough. You can't stop Youtube ads with DNS blocking on a smart TV device.
The trick is figuring out what scripts you have to enable as a bare minimum for the site to work, and then don't allow any others. Kinda clunky for the first time visit to a site (or if a site changes up their backend) but once it's done it's usually smooth sailing.

I've experimented with noscript, but the sheer quantity on the web today makes web pages unusable if you turn all scripting off.
