You forget 'female thirst' as a factor. In Asia the 'boy bands' phenomenon is mainly tailored to young women and not men. They're a big commercial factor with an international (tween/adolescent/young adult) female audience.
Guys generally look on in horror at this phenomenon, for obvious reasons. These 'boy band' members can't sing, rap (cringe), dance, dress or do anything remotely good. They're just repellent in every conceivable way. Did I mention that they rap?
Anyway, this huge commercial market has started to contaminate other entertainment sectors, such as the wuxia (kung fu) genre (e.g. Netflix' 'Handsome Siblings') and, of course, the gaming industry.
If 'gay characters' in Asian entertainment have long hair, it's a pretty big indication that it's tailored to women, and not men. Female Asian audiences are pretty degenerate in this regard.
