We were hounded by the entire backstory of every president in the modern era. For either good intentions or ill, we still learned about them to absurd extents and nothing could ever be hidden for long.

Obama was always the exception. His entire history was intentionally hazy. Not hidden completely to cause more suspicion but simply downplayed to a point where you looked crazy to bring it up and you were a racist for talking about it.
