The only highway system that's ever driven me away from a city is Dallas/Ft Worth, because it legit feels like you are under assault at all times driving through it.
Otherwise, when it comes to "downtowns" I find in most cities they are so filled with people I don't like that even when they are filled with "amenities" I avoid them. Because the people walking them are insufferable and can barely stay out of the road, the shops are overpriced, and everything there only exists to be "neat" to tourists instead of residents.

Every time I hear somebody talking about some attraction or business that’s in a city, it immediately cancels all interest for me.
