Sunken cost fallacy more likely than anything else. They bet everything on 'trusting the experts' for it to do either nothing or make their lives worst while those that refused to get it suffered no health issues and now they have nowhere to go but double down as anything else means admitting not just that they were wrong but the systems they defended all their lives is inadequate and is willing to harm them without any remorse.
