There's a famous phrase in the Bhagavat Gita, that is apt but get's partially quoted by much the same people that would like the tolerant (love thy neighbor Christians) to lie down and accept their servitude. It is a reply to a question asking, isn't non-violence most important? The reply is 'Non violence is the highest duty/righteousness, unless there is no other way for duty/righteousness. ' So kill the fucking evil fucks [paraphrasing the last line].
The same reason we gave police a monopoly on violence, but they are now just security guards for some level of government.
I’ve heard theologians say that self defense is ok. Some Christian pacifists literally say to just stand there and let yourself be killed. Now if I was captured by taliban and they said deny Christ or die then I’d have to die but I will defend loved ones from evil. No question

Thing is, if you only take action when it is unbearable, you will find yourself out of the tent in the cold and the camel in bed with your wife.
It's why you need to viciously safeguard your boundaries, or find yourself left to the tender mercies of reservation/street life.
