I'd say this was already pretty common with millennials. I can't count how many friends I know who are in long committed relationships and have no interest in actually marrying their partner or having kids. And these friends I'm referring to are doing well enough career-wise that financial concerns are not the reason. Usually they opt to getting pets instead.
I hate the switch from a pet owner to a pet parent. Nah, bro, that dog would eat your face off if it was starving. That love isn't unconditional no matter how much you think it is. It is still an animal.
