I think there's a level of nostalgia as well. SA was once great, and they were alive for that. It's hard to admit how badly it's gotten, and they can relive that life without too much worry even today.

Naivety is a common problem for the upper class.
Nostalgia. Can't deny that. I feel the same way about Canada and the US and it can get so much worse.
