I sort of buy that and I don't, just don't expect these sorts of pieces to be anything other than decoration even if they are technically 'functional'. It's the same with medieval reproduction pieces, you've got a lot of cheap shit out there.
Chainmail is a great western example, it does actually stop a knife/sword when made correctly. However because most pieces made now are collector items or made for re-enactment/LARP most of the practicality is lost. It will be the same with that sword you bought. I still don't buy even with modern techniques they can just churn out stuff like that properly for $50 because there's some very sophisticated smithing techniques involved. I was pretty fascinated looking at how plate gauntlets are made as an example but even with modern tech it's very tricky.
