Because enemies that have committed acts of war against the United States were in Syria trying to conquer it. There's no inherent problem with bombing al-Qaeda and ISIS in Syria, if you don't suck at it. If Obama's state department wasn't intent on overthrowing the Russian government it could have been a great opportunity to bury the hatchet in the Islamists' corpse.
