Hate to break it to you. But, the phone companies in the US were editing sms a few years ago. There were Reddit threads, and I tested it with a few friends. You could send screen shots of articles, but links to certain sites never made it through.
Yep. I realized this as well when I tried to send someone a pdf of a book through facebook and it kept getting "corrupted" on their end even if I changed the file name.

Did you try to zip it? Sounds rather weird, probably intentional since the filename doesn't matter for the content of the PDF.
Just wound up emailing it instead.
