I don't know how NY goes. In California, they can't keep you from doing your job. If your job is TV host, they can't keep you from working as a TV host for someone else. I mean IANAL, but that's how it works for computer programmers.
Noncompete would typically say you can't solicit their employees or customers, whatever that means in the case of a TV host. That guy wouldn't be selling advertisements. He would be barred from recruiting former colleagues to go work at new place.
