It's selective compassion. Even if you wanted to care about everybody equally, you can't. Like trying to watch every youtube video there's too much suffering for any person to care about.
So your only choice is to pick and choose who and what you care about, or not care about anything in particular. And of course when you're running a society the only choice is the latter.
I mean it's sad at the end that the guy posting this is stuck in SF, but the right thing isn't to give him pity bucks but to expect him to solve his own problems.
