I think its less repentance and more ego. As one of the other comments said, he is probably terrified of them taking this censorship hatchet to his legacy and destroying him the same way they have destroyed so many others.

He is an untouchable elite right now during his life, but once he is dead he won't be given nearly the same protections and eventually they will deem him problematic and in need of repair.
