Here's the thing. When Trump first ran, the mainstream news didn't understand how to cover Trump. Trump's initial run worked off the "any media coverage is good media coverage" motif but that's not true today. The media has figured out how to cover Trump now to hurt him. Trump knows this and is adapting.

Trump is far more venerable now than he was 7 years ago. That is a true statement. That doesn't mean he's not the right candidate though. I don't like Trump but I don't think this decision should have anything to do with whether you like or don't like Trump.
