Honestly, the whole Holy Trinity thing is obvious post-hoc nonsense. The value of Jesus is mostly in understanding responsibility and sacrifice.
imma say it: Catholics are weird.
This actually can be a problem among some Christians. If your kid wants to die to go to heaven, that kids not being raised right and is missing the point. The whole idea of 'heaven' as reward for piety is just another mysticism, when really you should focus on 'bringing about the kingdom of heaven on Earth' with moral actions.
When I was living in Seattle, a lot of the ideas of heaven came from trying to survive the madness. We couldn't make heaven on earth, so perhaps we could have it later. The sermons and conversations were more on surviving the evils of the world and finding happiness anyway.
Since moving to Florida it has been much more hopeful. Heaven on earth is possible, and the people strive for it.
Perhaps a useful idea I've gotten from Christians is the idea that salvation can't be done except through God. Or more importantly: you're not God, so you can't save them. If we understand God to be the manifestation of 'The Truth and Light', then you realize the message is that you can't save other people by doing anything but exposing them to truth, and then realizing when you need to go and build something for yourself somewhere else, rather than trying to help or save people who don't want to be.
That has been my attitude and why I dislike the loud Evangelicals (among other reasons). My attitude is that it is not my job to go out and find people to bring into the flock, especially since many of them are actually wolves. But if God calls someone and sends them to me, I will help them as best I can.
