They hate guns because they don’t want the responsibility that comes with them. The same reason they hate pregnancies, individualism, the constitution, etc. they believe freedoms should come with no consequences, that’s actions should have no costs, and that denial of reality is their most base cognitive dissonance that the rest is built on.
They absolutely don't want the responsibility. When pressed why they feel people shouldn't own guns they respond with "I would never trust myself with a gun!" "If I had a gun I don't know what I would do!"
As always, it's projection. They think since they would immediately turn the gun on themselves or others it's obvious that's what everyone would do.

Unless the cost can be mitigated to others, hence elective abortion, “social safety nets”, and the love for authoritarian communism
