53 Wayne State University suspends prof (w/ pay) & refers to law enforcement after he says "I think it is far more admirable to kill a racist, homophobic, or transphobic speaker than it is to shout them down" (twitter.com) posted 1 year ago by YesMovement 1 year ago by YesMovement +53 / -0 20 comments share 20 comments share save hide report block hide replies
He should be censured, but not fired. There is nothing legally actionable here.
If I offered to kill people at work, I'd be fired.
To me the problem is not vague threats of violence; it's that he is justifying doing this violence at his job. Like I say, most people don't want employees like that.
But this is a university. Matters of speech are different. Context matters.
Any set of standards where somebody like this isn't fired, permanently blacklisted, and ideally imprisoned is a bad set of standards.
Maybe in a 'fair' world where there is real freedom of speech. We don't live there. Only power matters.
