The "female samurai" thing isn't entirely unbelievable, as long as she's not literally a female samurai. In Japan, women participated in battle all the time. They were called onna musha. They were never samurai and if this woman receives the title of samurai then it's purely historical revisionism, but they did fight. Even if it takes five women to defeat one man, including women in your fighting force would increase its strength by 20%. Besides, everyone knows what happens to the women once their men are all dead. Better to go out in a blaze of glory. Of course, the idea of a lone female warrior roaming the land and besting male warriors is absolutely ludicrous, but maybe she'll have some sort of macguffin that makes up for the fact that women are naturally much weaker than men. Maybe she'll have Venom, like Bane.
A black ninja, though, is just fucking stupid. Half of a ninja's job was spying. I don't think a man who's basically wearing a giant sign that says "THIS MAN IS A FOREIGNER, DO NOT TRUST HIM" would work terribly well as a spy. I really hope they weren't dumb enough to go down this route, but then we are in the thick of Current Year so I wouldn't doubt it.
Galaxy brain take right here. Women can barely carry their own equipment, never mind rations, shelter, etc. What you've actually done by adding women is reduced the combat effectiveness of your men because before the battle they've got to ruck with a 20% heavier pack because Miss Anything-a-Man-Can-Do over there can't carry her own tent and keep up with the platoon at the same time.
This is true in technology-based forces like the ones common in Europe, where better equipment wins battles. But this is feudal Japan, a land where the metal is of terrible quality and the folding technique had just recently been invented, was extremely time consuming, and was reserved for outfitting nobility. Most combatants didn't even have armor except for maybe a basic breastplate, and a lot of them fought with simple, light spears. No commoner was carrying anything into battle except a three pound stick with a pointy end.
Also, I never said that women took part in sieges or raids. Most of the battles they fought in were defensive. No tents or rations required.
