The irony being is that whilst shortwave radio in Europe is pretty much dead beside a number of Chinese and Romanian originated broadcasts, it could become the last bastion of free speech if Internet, mainstream terrestrial and satellite broadcasting all become extinct in terms of freedom of expression. I have a working shortwave radio for this reason.

This combined with the influx of cheap high-power FM transmitters from China, and you could see a return of pirate radio stations.
