Don't forget "Tar Heels" and "Yankees".
Both actually started out as slurs. Yankees actually still is a slur, but Tar Heels was an insult to North Carolinians in the Confederate army for being slow to engage in battle. It literally means "coward", but the North Carolinians adopted the name anyway.
I've had this conversation here before. Yankees has an amazing history, and it's weird to think it came from German immigrants with names like Jan and Jahnke.
Also, it's a perfect example of an appropriated slur. Yankee Doodle was created to mock the colonists, and instead of being offended, they embraced it.
Very true. Heck, if you read Milton Berle's jokebook, the Yankees win in their jokes.
