Look at alot of popular manga and you see a screaming horde of blatant passion projects that could only be manifested through the power of god, anime, and industrial-strength autism.
A Young Bride's Tale? Blame? Things like that could never be done in America outside of niche indie projects, and even then exposure would be low(and they sure as hell wouldn't last as long).
And it's not like anime is immune to that, either. Hell, I just saw a pilot for an anime movie based around a japanese TTRPG module that combines mountain climbing with Lovecraft's The Mountain of Madness with such attention to detail that it had actual mountain climbers commenting on it.
You're not really going to find stuff like that in the west.
