Having the house at just above 50% is hardly power.
I agree with you, but what they would say to this is that the neolibs (think Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi) and Republicans are both right wing. It's fucking retarded, but that's what they would say to you if you called them out on it.
The sad part is that user is only partly wrong. Yes, the elites want people at each others throats over stupid bullshit instead of challenging the power of the elites. The absolutely delusional part is where they would likely tell you that in the current political paradigm, the left wing is the anti establishment party. It is literally impossible to reason with anybody retarded enough to believe that for one second.
Well, first of all, I'm not the biggest fan of that dichotomy in the first place, but insomuch as everyone uses it, it is pretty unavoidable.
There are multiple ways one could argue that neolibs are not right wing.
Radically pro abortion, anti gun, pro bureaucracy, pro LGBTWTFBBQ indoctrination in schools, pro union, pro taxation, pro welfare, etc. Think of positions held by leftists, and most of them are furthered by neolibs.
They're also pro open borders and blatantly globalist. I would say being globalist fundamentally precludes one from being right wing, so by that metric many of the RINO Republicans are much more left wing than Democrats are right wing.
Also, there's the line of thought that any ideology that is authoritarian is fundamentally left wing. That is, that the so-called "libertarian left" does not exist because the term itself is an oxymoron. Then from there, it goes without saying neolibs are authoritarian, so they must be left wing.
I could nod my head at any of the above arguments, but to reiterate, I hate the left-right dichotomy anyway. I prefer more specific labels with more firm, less fluid definitions. One might say the definitions of left and right are not fluid, but I think its pretty undeniable that they have been mangled beyond recognition when one looks at how they're used in common parlance.
Yeah and in the end it is impossible to have a productive discussion with someone like that. In such a case ask them to define what the term capitalism means to them and either they will give a response that is so thoroughly retarded and divorced from any common definition of the word, or they will provide a definition that is blatantly at odds with the current reality of things in the United States and most of the west.
You bring up some interesting points. One thing that I've noticed that leftists and neoliberals have in common is that they both believe in the tabula rasa interchangeable unit theory of humans. Specifically, that all people are essentially the same, and all characteristics are irrelevant, race, sex, body type, culture, education, life experience, etc., etc. You could take any one person, and arbitrarily replace them with any other human on the planet, and that there'd be no difference. That's why neoliberals see nothing wrong with replacing the existing populations of people in the West with immigrants from the third world. It's also why leftists push for all of that "representation" in media. It's easy to see why neolibs and leftists truly see people's outward appearances as arbitrary (like we're all avatars in a MMO) if that's what they actually believe.
