How else are you going to persuade the population to accept an ever diminishing standard of living? While paying off crony capitalists in the heatpump/solar/electric car industrial complex who no doubt bribed you.
You know why the environmental groups oppose nuclear power? Because they are propped up by the natural gas lobby. Gazprom bribed the Bund, the main German environmental group, and then they came out in favor of Nord Stream (the pipeline recently blown up by Joe Biden).
Nuclear is abundant. They don't want that. They seem to want scarcity, they want to decrease your standard of living. I don't know why, but consider that placing solar farms and wind farms everywhere will take up space. Which means that you have to live in a pod, and there's no space for farm animals, so you have to eat bugs. You, not the elites.
Because their goal is negative GDP and destroying human development and growth.
They hate humans and human civilization. They worship "nature" and the non-human "natural" world and despise things like roads and farms and the spread of cities encroaching on their beloved "mother nature".
As absolutely retarded as that is, it is pervasive across cultures. Self-hating humans are a real thing.
That's the dumb people though. That's not an explanation for why the regime is pushing it. Just like the dumb people reason for supporting Ukraine is "aww... poor innocent people", and the regime has totally different motivations.
Well, I hate other humans. Not sure if that counts.
Lots of elites see humans as a cancer on the planet, and want to shut down human consumption and development as some kind of threat to the natural world. And yes, a lot of elites are crazy/stupid and believe whacked out shit. Look at how many are Leftists.
Let me just say that if you think elites are smarter or somehow playing 4d chess, they aren't. Elites are just normal people who either got lucky and born into money, or they happened to be good at 1 thing and are retards in most everything else (Kanye being an extreme example). Joe Biden is POTUS and we can both agree he's a retard. Kamala is also clearly stupid. Elites can be impressionable and manipulated and indoctrinated just like anyone else. Sure some are smarter than others, but there are no 4d chess geniuses behind the scenes ruling the world in a secret group.
As you have said before, obviously they would grant exceptions to themselves and their elite friends, they just want to shut down the consumerism and development of "the masses".
They don't care about "the natural world", except insofar that they enjoy being in nature and they don't think that the living standards of the swinish multitude justifies a diminution of their own pleasures. They do not regard "humans" as a cancer, they regard other people as a cancer. The non-elites.
Oh, I definitely don't think they're very smart. It's just that there is one set of reasons that they have for stuff, and another that they sell to the populace. "Your living standards need to decrease so that we have higher standard relative to you" isn't going to cut it, so they invent phony narratives.
Elites are the most immoral and unscrupulous people around, which is how they got to be elites. Even if they inherited wealth, they also inherited the immoral and unscrupulous genes from the people who got to where they were by nefarious means.
As if they have any actual power. They are but pawns of the elites, as "leaders" everywhere are. You yourself pointed out that Putin is constrained by elite opinion. And that's a "dictator"! How much more would that be true in a "democracy".
I'm not asserting any 'secret group'. Fact is that if you have money, then you have power. Fact is that lobbies, MNOs and NGOs have a lot of power. Fact is that the interests of these people differ markedly from ours.
And preferably have a regression in living standards. There is a quote in Nineteen Eighty Four where Orwell says that Inner Party members did not have great living standards, but that because everyone else was miserable, even small comforts granted all the more social standing.
