I think the most likely scenario is the police spread DANGEROUS MISINFORMATION by saying he had been released.
I assume "He will appear in court later this morning" would be for a bail hearing where it will be determined if he would be held or released- also seems odd they would release him in the middle of the night. The remand centre also wouldn't confirm he was released which also seems odd.
They probably drove him out to the frozen Alberta countryside to kick him out like they did with the truckers and like they are infamous for doing to drunk natives.
