The only reason there hasn't been a second civil war at this point is because the lines are not geographically drawn. The inability for the red and blue areas to coexist is becoming unsustainable, and without a national divorce we are just going to see more riots and more chaos.
That's certainly making it harder to split. Most blue states are dominated by a few major population centers that override the votes of their more conservative rural neighbors.
