I'd prefer no draft for the simple reason that if you struggle drafting civilians for war then you're already up shit's creek by that stage.
I'm 50/50 on national service though as the forced part not a fan of but the learning of skills is tempting.
I'm surprised, even as someone who probably sees more of a role for government than most people here.
Just why would you trust the government to implement a 'national service' that actually teaches people useful skills?
I don't which is why I'm still 50/50 on it, even if it was just basic weapon and combat training, I'd be more on the side of seeing it in a favourable light just because if everyone has a basic understanding of how to defend themselves, might be harder to convince them that they are victims.
It's the same issue I have with the death penalty, some crimes where it's beyond reasonable doubt (like when motherfuckers record themselves doing it) deserves death but still don't trust the government to do it.
Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. Here in Europe, "national service" means you get to be a slave for the government for a year, and have nothing to show for it but that you were a journeyman to grief.
Nah, my version of national service was having people trained in the military for a few years so if shit hits the fan, everyone knows how to use the heavy ordinance.
