They hate the idea of happiness coming from anything other than chasing self-indulgence under the illusion of liberation. They simply cannot fathom it any other way.

There were plenty of woes back then and I think it goes without saying that a lot of the bullshit we see now AROSE from the people of those times, but they knew how to appreciate simpler things and find happiness beyond themselves.
