The main reason we see Japan headlining the decreased birthrate is because the global powers try to use it as a wedge to go 'go on, accept more third world migrants' and Japan's repeated answer is to fuck off
They've mitigated some of the damage by more focus on automation and tech but they aren't as technologically advanced as South Korea or Taiwan and they recognise the issue enough to try and create solutions now so that immigration is NEVER required. The problem would probably be urban density that in order to work or get education you need to go to the cities, might be worth trying to relocate a place of higher education into a rural area to be a university town or enabling better Internet speeds nationally so you can work remotely.
Feminism is an issue but Japan's traditional values and laws on cheating undercuts a lot of their influence so more focus should be on how can you get people to spread out more into rural areas so they'd want to have more kids as I'm beginning to think cities are the biggest form of contraception!
as manufacturers/exporters, but the consumer technology available is the same for all the developed countries, you can buy the same electronics in Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Europe and Taiwan/Korea don't get those export products any cheaper than what you find on international markets. it's not like Korea is hogging secret robot techs that let them replace aging workers. Korea, Taiwan and Japan are all suffering from long term wage depression/stagnation problems
