In the Soviet Union, innocent people would make excuses for the government as they were be taken away in chains to be tortured, starved or executed in the Gulags, saying things like "it's just a mistake, if Stalin knew I was innocent this wouldn't be happening".

Some people simply do not have the capacity to understand the truth and will live in denial their entire lives just so they can continue to live in their delusion.
