USA is paying for European defense so that Europeans can get free healthcare, free college and work only 35 hours a week
The USA is not a charity. It's getting something in return. And that is the absolute subservience of its European vassals. They blew up our pipelines, for God's sake, and then blamed it on Russia while crowing about what a 'great opportunity' it was to sell us their overpriced LNG crap.
it's Europe compromising with Russia
Compromising? There was nothing to compromise about. There is no reason to be hostile to Russia. It's US-induced hostility towards Russia that has led us here.
Had we taken account of our own interests, we would have realized that a fight between two constituent republics of the USSR has absolutely nothing to do with us. Of course, the Von der Leyens take account of their interests, not that of the people, and it's in their interests to be subservient to the US and do whatever Washington commands.
Europe wouldn't be drunk with Russian gas
We were warm, had industry and had cheap energy.
How awful.
Now the US taxpayers have to pay billions to fix that mess in Ukraine.
The US created the mess, it's only fair that the US pay to fix it. Also the hundreds of billions supposedly necessary for the recovery of Little Russia from the conflict that the US provoked.
USA spends massive amount of money to defend already existing NATO members in Europe
Which makes Europe beholden to the US. The British Empire spent more on the American colonies than it got from them in revenue, who do you think was in the driver's seat there?
allowing those European countries to spend less on their own defense.
In the long run, you may be right, but if Finland started that way, it would look very bad for NATO and Finland.
NATO pressure.
Lotta money in social programs that could be cut to make way for an increase in defense spending!
Let's see.
The USA doesn't subsidize anything. It has an empire. By not having its own defense, Europe has to listen to whatever the US tells it to do.
