Can he be trusted? I just reread the book and I feel Hollywood would turn it into some allegory on racism or sexism

I would only trust him as far as visuals and acting go. Writing is a different matter.

Ever play that crappy PS3 launch title Heavenly Sword? He should have won an Oscar for his role in it.
