I never understood why divorce payments aren't taxed, but inheritances are.

First £325k of assets can be bequeathed tax-free

There is an additional allowance of £175,000 when the family home is left to ‘direct descendants’, such as children or grandchildren.

Granny can still leave the the kids half a million tax free.
