Remember when they whined and kvetched about James Earle Jones being cast as Thulsa Doom in Conaan the Barbarian? He was fucking perfect, probably one of my favorite villains and they shit on it.
I didn’t know they had an issue with it but I was very small when that came out. Denzel in Training Day was good. Granted I didn’t like seeing him as the villain but he was good.
I think my first exposure to the criticism was with Roger Ebert's review, in how he made a complete detour into how some super-aryan just decapitated a black man, then rambled on about nazis.
I guess you can see racism in everything if you choose to. I remember enjoying the movie and it’s not like Jones was forced to play the role. Seemed like he enjoyed it

The man is in a league of his own.
I think that was the second movie, which in hindsight they likely made that decision to vindicate the first movie.
