I would say that women in that case aren't equal to men but higher. They already have a home field advantage in that they can make babies, which gives them inherent value. So if this dynamic were the 100 meter dash, women would be starting 50 meters ahead of men. In order to "balance" this, men have to have successful careers, peak physical condition, confidence, good genes, etc. And that's just to get to parity.
When women get careers and status and lots of money, that puts them farther ahead on the 100 meter dash, and so it becomes near impossible for men to catch up to that.
I would posit that men do actually like equal women, but women are inherently unequal to men in their social value (at least until menopause), and because men have to "catch up" to them, the supply of women that are actually at parity with the average Joe is small.
A great example of this is Japan. Look at what allowing women into the workforce has done to their age demographics. Their birthrate is at an unsustainable pace. People aren't having kids there. The amount of Hikikomori has exploded, and why wouldn't it? Women are hypergamous and giving them careers, status, and money only exacerbates that problem. Men over there are thinking "the game is rigged so the only winning move is not to play".
The real irony of all this, is that for as much misery as it causes men, it also makes women unhappy too, but their inherent nature prevents them from realizing it.
