Oh no, I can't publish my own stuff with ComicsGate-adjacent organizations, I might get blacklisted by all the top professional corporations that are literally not paying creators!
I've been working for 7 years without getting paid but at least I own my company and thus made the decision to forfeit a salary to help the business grow into something stable.
Good planning and initial capital. Abundant sacrifices and good money management.
Also helps that it's essentially a family business so I could sacrifice stuff like moving out to build a better future.
I would say it cost me quite a bit of my 20s but not like there was much of a choice with my countries economy being terrible. Most jobs that don't involve flipping burgers asking people for a university degree, doctorate and 5 years of experience to the point where you basically have to slave away as an unpaid intern to even get a foot in the door.
So I chose to sacrifice that bit extra and jump on my brother's intent to work for himself by helping finance and handling the accounting (and the government mandated bullshit that comes along with it)
Still I don't think I had much choice given my overall health problems so...shrug we do the best we can with what life gives us and we have a jolly good time with the ride of life.
Basically, a lot of third rate comics publishers are IP farms run on borrowed money, looking to score the next big Hollywood option. It's a scam, where the organizers draw a salary for a few years while hoping to strike gold on owning the next Squid Game.
If they fail, bankruptcy follows. But none of the money was theirs, so they walk away. Only creators and investors get left holding the bag. If not, ca-ching! Jackpot!
The investors and the creatives are all hopelessly converged, so I watch them fucking each other over in the bottom of the crab pot with glee anyway.

What is his excuse for working without pay ?
How do you eat and pay bills?

This youtube comment sums up what I think is happening.
