I've seen some speculate that if various Intelligence apparati control or have access to enough of these exchanges it effectively voids any advantages arising from decentralization. I don't really know enough about them to know if this is plausible or bullshit.
I haven't looked at Bitcoin transaction fees lately, but the bad thing was making transactions off a hardware wallet when exchanges were offering free transactions. Partly why I have mostly Bitcoin Cash, it actually works if you want to pay with it from a hardware wallet.
Everything I held in an exchange was interest bearing. Always seemed dumb to just hold in exchange for free.

What about software wallets ?
The idea of crypto was that it was decentralized.
