they are being paid by an oil heiress: Aileen Getty. I didn't read too much into this and don't feel like researching this now, but it's probably a spoiled rich brat wanting to get back at her parents. if my hunch is wrong, then my apologies to the oil baroness.
but there's also the well-known phenomenon of leftists dismissing bad actors on their side as "not the real left" any time they get exposed. so I wouldn't trust that the people carrying out the vandalism aren't ideological.
