Pattern recognition is a sign of intelligence, and a necessary requirement for survival of all lifeforms in this universe, which naturally weeds out stupidity. The better a person/animal is at recognizing various other people, animals, plants, behaviors, weather, etc. as safe, dangerous, or otherwise, the better they'll be able to succeed and survive. Lack of pattern recognition achieves the antithesis of that outcome: failure, injury, and death.
