Before he came around and the media started focusing so much on race, people just didn't care. They just treated each other decently, for the most part.

Must be nice to have lived in such a place. Much of the South has always been under the thumb of ghetto beasts making life difficult just for the sake of it. Shit lots of areas I know can only live decently by still being segregated entirely.
