And what's more, the coup government immediately targeted the Russian language, which made it clear to Russian speakers what the writing on the wall was.

They didn't like the Yanukovich government. Fair enough. He had already agreed to new elections though. Had the just waited a while, none of this would have happened. It would have been hard for Russia to justify taking Crimea if election results had gone against it.

And so a single act leads to untold misery for millions for more than 8 years, and who knows for how many more years.
