I think they are taking bribes, either directly (less likely as that can be easily revealed) or indirectly (by serving on a sinecure position for companies whose interests you serve after leaving politics).
Politics is not about ideology, it is about self-interest - as hard as it is to imagine when they are seemingly pushing ideology. Unfortunately, not the interests of the nation, but the interests of the cretins riding the donkey.
Plus, they're facing growing protests demanding the opening of NS2. This was a happy little "coincidence" for them.
The odds of the German population being allowed a say in government is infinitesimal, even without the pipeline being blown up. Though it certainly serves their interests to be able to say "well, it's gone, we can't reopen it even if we wanted to".
